| Day | Focus | Distance / time from Vancouver | Cheapest cost (CAD) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | North Shore: Lynn Canyon (free) or Capilano | 20-40 min, SeaBus plus bus, or drive | 0-80 |
| Day 2 | Squamish and the Sea to Sky Gondola | About 60km, 45-60 min drive | 62-76 |
| Day 3 | Victoria and Butchart Gardens, BC Ferries | 95 min crossing, 8+ hours door to door | 18-22 foot passenger |
| Day 4 | Richmond and Steveston | 25-30 min Canada Line, 55 min total | 15-25 |
| Day 5 | Whistler via the Sea-to-Sky Highway | 120-125km, about 2 hours, no rail | 10-40 in gas, split |
| Day 6 | Grouse Mountain, the splurge day | 20-40 min, SeaBus plus bus, or drive | 86-89 |
Day 1: The North Shore, free if you pick right
Canada Line from YVR, roughly CAD 9.35 total, about 25 minutes downtown. SeaBus to Lonsdale Quay, then Lynn Canyon Park’s free suspension bridge, saving today’s budget for the Grouse Mountain splurge on Day 6 instead of paying for Capilano now too (book either through capbridge.com if you would rather do both). Gastown’s steam clock and cobblestones cost nothing, dinner off Water Street runs CAD 20-35 per person.
Day 2: Squamish and the Sea to Sky Gondola
About 60km, 45-60 minutes up Highway 99, no rail on this route. The Sea to Sky Gondola runs CAD 62-76 online, Shannon Falls and the Stawamus Chief trailhead are free stops on the way.
Day 3: Victoria and Butchart Gardens, the foot-passenger way
Foot passenger on BC Ferries , roughly CAD 18-22 one-way against CAD 60-80 plus a reservation fee for a vehicle. Budget the full day, 3.5-4 hours each way door to door, and pick one of Butchart Gardens or the Royal BC Museum rather than both.
Day 4: Richmond and Steveston, the cheap half-day
Canada Line to Brighouse, about 25-30 minutes, then on to Steveston , roughly 55 minutes total. Richmond’s dim sum beats downtown Chinatown’s, and the harbour walk is free.
Day 5: Whistler, split the drive
120-125km, about 2 hours up Highway 99, no passenger rail exists on this corridor. Split a rental car three or four ways and the drive runs closer to CAD 10-15 per person than the CAD 60-80 a solo renter pays, or book the shuttle or day tour from the box above instead. Whistler Village rewards an afternoon of lift-accessed hiking or biking in summer, check whistler.com for current hours. This is a sightseeing day, not a ski day, unless you are staying the night.
Day 6: Grouse Mountain, the one splurge
Is Grouse Mountain worth CAD 86-89 after already doing Lynn Canyon for free? By Day 6, yes, for most people. Five days of free and low-cost choices, Lynn Canyon over Capilano, foot passenger over a vehicle ferry, a split Whistler drive, leave real room in the budget for one paid mountain experience. The Skyride gondola climbs to a viewpoint over the city, the Georgia Strait, and the surrounding peaks, with a lumberjack show and a wildlife refuge with rescued grizzlies at the top. Book the ticket from the box above to skip the gate line, and check current hours at grousemountain.com before you go. Cross back over Lions Gate or the Second Narrows bridge before 4pm if you are driving, both back up hard at rush hour.
Where to stay
Downtown or Gastown for all six nights keeps every connection, SeaBus, Highway 99, the Tsawwassen ferry, and the Canada Line, within easy reach. Our guide to where to stay in Vancouver covers neighbourhoods by budget tier.
Six days, real numbers
Five cheap days plus one deliberate Grouse Mountain splurge keeps this trip in the CAD 450-500 per person range outside lodging, still less than what a full-price version of every single day would run. The BC travel tips guide has more on timing bookings around peak season.
