Vancouver to BC in 5 Days on a Budget
Vancouver to BC in 5 Days: Adding Whistler
Five days keeps the 4-day North Shore, Squamish, Victoria, and Richmond plan and adds Whistler itself, the priciest single day in this family if you drive up solo, considerably cheaper split across a carpool or a shared shuttle seat. Nests inside the 6-day and 7-day versions.

|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | North Shore: Lynn Canyon (free) or Capilano | 20-40 min, SeaBus plus bus, or drive | 0-80 |
| Day 2 | Squamish and the Sea to Sky Gondola | About 60km, 45-60 min drive | 62-76 |
| Day 3 | Victoria and Butchart Gardens, BC Ferries | 95 min crossing, 8+ hours door to door | 18-22 foot passenger |
| Day 4 | Richmond and Steveston | 25-30 min Canada Line, 55 min total | 15-25 |
| Day 5 | Whistler via the Sea-to-Sky Highway | 120-125km, about 2 hours, no rail | 10-40 in gas, split |
Day 1: The North Shore, free if you pick right
Canada Line from YVR, roughly CAD 9.35 total, about 25 minutes downtown. SeaBus to Lonsdale Quay, then Lynn Canyon Park’s free suspension bridge and trails, or Capilano for roughly CAD 75-80 if its Treetops Adventure and Cliffwalk extras are worth the price to you, booked through capbridge.com for close to 10% off online. Gastown’s steam clock and cobblestones cost nothing, dinner off Water Street runs CAD 20-35 per person.
Day 2: Squamish and the Sea to Sky Gondola
About 60km, 45-60 minutes up Highway 99, no passenger rail runs this route. The Sea to Sky Gondola runs CAD 62-76 online, and Shannon Falls plus the Stawamus Chief trailhead are free stops on the same drive.
Day 3: Victoria and Butchart Gardens, the foot-passenger way
Foot passenger on BC Ferries runs roughly CAD 18-22 one-way against CAD 60-80 plus a reservation fee for a vehicle. Budget the full day, 3.5-4 hours each way door to door, and pick one of Butchart Gardens or the Royal BC Museum.
Day 4: Richmond and Steveston, the cheap half-day
Canada Line to Brighouse, about 25-30 minutes, then on to Steveston , roughly 55 minutes total. Richmond’s dim sum beats downtown Chinatown’s on price and quality, and the harbour village walk is free.
Day 5: Whistler, the honest way to do it in a day
Can I ski Whistler as a day trip from Vancouver? Technically, but it is a poor shape of day: by the time the drive up and back is counted against lift hours, you are paying for a lift ticket you barely used. Save skiing for an overnight; treat a day trip as sightseeing instead. Whistler sits 120-125km up Highway 99, about 2 hours with no passenger rail as an option at all, self-drive, a shuttle, or a booked tour are the only ways there.
This is the one day in the whole trip where a solo rental genuinely costs more than it needs to. Split gas and a rental three or four ways and the drive costs closer to CAD 10-15 per person than the CAD 60-80 a solo renter pays for the same tank and time. A shuttle or organized day tour, see the booking box above, runs a flat per-person rate instead, worth comparing against your group’s actual car math before booking either way. In Whistler Village, spend the afternoon on lift-accessed hiking or biking in summer, or just walk the pedestrian village core, check whistler.com for current hours and events. Head back to Vancouver by early evening, winter drivers should check road conditions first, this stretch can run 4-plus hours in poor weather.
Where to stay
Downtown or Gastown for all five nights keeps the North Shore, Squamish, Victoria ferry, and Richmond connections all close. Whistler is the one day trip where an overnight genuinely helps if skiing or a longer hike is the goal, worth weighing against the cost of driving back the same night. Our guide to where to stay in Vancouver covers the city-based nights.
Five days, real numbers
Lynn Canyon, foot-passenger Victoria, cheap Richmond dim sum, and a shared Whistler drive keep this trip under roughly CAD 350-400 per person outside lodging across the five days. The British Columbia day trips guide has more on stretching the same logic across six or seven days.
