Vancouver, Canada in 2 Days on a Budget
Vancouver, Canada in 2 Days: The Gateway-First Plan
Two days from Vancouver’s Pacific gateway start in Richmond, the borough YVR itself sits in, then cross to the North Shore’s free suspension bridge alternative to paid Capilano. Every price below runs in Canadian dollars, roughly CAD 1.36 to 1.40 per USD 1. Need Squamish or Victoria too? Step up to the 3-day or the full 7-day version.

Is Vancouver, Canada the same as Vancouver, Washington?
No. This itinerary covers Vancouver, British Columbia, on Canada’s Pacific coast, a separate country from Vancouver, Washington, a much smaller US city near Portland, Oregon, roughly 400km south across an international border. Currency differs too: Canada uses the Canadian dollar (CAD), not the US dollar, despite the shared dollar sign.
Day 1: Richmond and Steveston, the arrival day
Land at YVR and tap onto the Canada Line. Continuing downtown or transferring at Bridgeport station for the short Richmond-Brighouse branch both carry the same CAD 6.50 YVR AddFare on top of the CAD 2.85 zone fare, about CAD 9.35 total, since the surcharge applies to any trip that starts at YVR-Airport station, not only ones bound for downtown. It doesn’t apply on the return trip to the airport.
Richmond has the highest concentration of Chinese and Hong Kong diaspora residents outside Asia, and its dim sum is widely rated cheaper and better than downtown Chinatown’s. A meal at the Richmond Public Market or Aberdeen Centre runs roughly CAD 15-25 per person, and menu prices don’t include tax: GST (5%) plus BC’s PST (7%) both get added at the till, close to 12% combined, a common first-timer surprise. Tip 15-20% on the pre-tax subtotal, standard practice across Canada.
A further bus or short drive reaches Steveston, a working fishing harbour with the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site and a free waterfront walk. Head downtown by evening; Gastown’s cobblestone streets and steam clock cost nothing to see.
Is Richmond worth doing before the rest of Vancouver?
Yes, especially arriving jetlagged. It sits between YVR and downtown rather than out of the way, the food genuinely beats city-centre value, and starting here means the first Canadian-dollar prices a visitor sees aren’t downtown’s most expensive ones.
Day 2: The North Shore, free if you pick right
Cross Burrard Inlet on the SeaBus, about 12 minutes for the same zone fare as the SkyTrain, to Lonsdale Quay, then a local bus toward Lynn Canyon Park. Its 1912 suspension bridge is shorter and lower than Capilano’s, but it costs nothing, with no ticket booth at all, and the surrounding rainforest trails cost nothing to walk either. Capilano itself runs roughly CAD 79.95 at the gate for a longer bridge plus the Treetops Adventure and Cliffwalk extras; book through capbridge.com ahead of a summer visit for close to 10% off.
Back downtown by mid-afternoon, dinner a block or two off Gastown’s main strip runs CAD 20-35 per person and usually beats the prices closest to the steam clock.
Where to stay
Downtown or Gastown keeps both days simple: an easy Canada Line ride from Richmond on Day 1, walking distance to the SeaBus terminal on Day 2. Our guide to staying in Vancouver, Canada breaks neighbourhoods down by budget tier.
Two days, real numbers
Dim sum in Richmond, the free Lynn Canyon bridge over Capilano, and two days of transit fares add up to roughly CAD 60-90 per person outside lodging. Swap in Capilano instead of Lynn Canyon and that climbs by another CAD 79.95. For Squamish, Victoria, and the onward-to-the-Rockies context this gateway city sits on, the 3-day version and beyond add both.
