A Long Weekend Based in Luquillo
A long weekend is enough time to see Luquillo’s beach, its kiosks, the rainforest corridor and one boat outing. Here is how the pieces fit together.
Morning, afternoon, evening
Day one, beach and kiosks. Spend the day at Balneario La Monserrate, where the reef keeps the water calm and parking is $4 per car by card or ATH Movil. From about September to December the beach is open Wednesday to Sunday, and from about January to August it is open daily. Dinner is at Los Kioskos de Luquillo beside the beach, where about 60 numbered kiosks cook frituras and mofongo until 9 or 10 p.m. Kiosk #22 is Jibaros and #42 is Ceviche Hut.
Day two, forest and lagoon. Drive about 15 minutes to the PR-191 corridor in El Yunque. Admission is free, there is no reservation, and the road is open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Visit La Coca Falls, Yokahu Tower and Juan Diego Falls. This route does not include La Mina Falls, which is closed for construction until about summer 2027. After dark, head to Las Croabas in Fajardo, about 20 minutes away, for a guided night kayak tour of Laguna Grande. The glow is not guaranteed and swimming is prohibited.
Day three, the sea. Choose between a Culebra ferry from Ceiba, about 25 to 30 minutes by road, or a catamaran snorkel day to Cayo Icacos from the Fajardo marinas. Ferry operator HMS Ferries posts timetables at puertoricoferry.com , and fares changed in 2026. Catamaran trips list at about $125 to $185 per adult on reseller sites.
Stretching the trip
A Vieques extension uses the same Ceiba port. Cars sell out far ahead, so plan vehicle space and lodging early. Weather can delay crossings, so keep a spare day at the end.
Distances from Luquillo
All times are approximate drives. The PR-191 corridor is about 15 minutes away, Laguna Grande about 20 minutes, the Ceiba ferry port about 25 to 30 minutes and San Juan airport about 45 to 60 minutes depending on traffic. The kiosks and the balneario are on PR-3, about five minutes east of the PR-191 turn.
Optional extras
The El Portal visitor center in the forest charges $8 for ages 16 and up, is free for 15 and under, and is open 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Optional timed tickets for it go on sale 30 days ahead. Surf lessons at Playa La Pared can fill a free morning, and Surfing Puerto Rico lists about 2.5 hours for ages 8 and up.

Seasonal notes
Hurricane season is June to November. In the forest, flash floods can arrive without rain overhead, so move away from the stream whenever it rises or clouds over. Rip currents are regular at Playa La Pared and Playa Azul, and the water at the balneario is the calmer choice. Corridor details are at puertorico.com .
