Luquillo Day Trip Planner: Ferries, Forest, Lagoon
Four destinations make easy day trips from Luquillo, and the distances below are approximate drive times. A fifth, Old San Juan, is a longer haul.
Planning around the clock
El Yunque is about 15 minutes from Luquillo and Laguna Grande is about 20. The Ceiba ferry port is about 25 to 30 minutes away, and San Juan is 45 to 60 minutes west depending on traffic.
El Yunque recreation corridor
No reservation is needed for the stretch of PR-191 that holds La Coca Falls, Yokahu Tower and the trails. It is free and first-come, first-served, open 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and it can close early when the car parks fill or flash floods threaten.
The El Portal visitor center is a separate site open 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Entry is $8 for ages 16 and up, free for those 15 and under and $4 with an interagency pass. Timed tickets for El Portal can be booked up to 30 days ahead. The visitor center is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Day and January 6, and for maintenance each September. Current trail news is on puertorico.com .
Trail status: La Mina Trail and Big Tree Trail are closed, and La Mina is due to reopen around summer 2027. Juan Diego Falls, La Coca Falls and Yokahu Tower are open.
Laguna Grande
Guided night kayak tours leave from Las Croabas in Fajardo. Plan the evening around the tour time, and remember that swimming is not allowed.
Culebra and Vieques
Both islands are served from the port at Ceiba. Look up sailing times and fares at puertoricoferry.com ; fares changed in 2026. A new Ceiba terminal has been under construction, so check which one your sailing uses. Cars are limited and book out well in advance, and rough weather can delay or cancel a crossing.
Cayo Icacos
Boats to this cay depart from Fajardo, and catamaran snorkel trips cost about $125 to $185 per adult on reseller sites.
Old San Juan
Old San Juan lies to the west and is not part of Luquillo. Allow for traffic on the drive back.
Dinner on the way home
Los Kioskos de Luquillo, about 60 open-air kiosks on PR-3 beside Balneario La Monserrate, are a handy place to eat after a day out. Most serve from about 11 a.m. or noon until 9 or 10 p.m. Some close on Monday and Tuesday.
Weather and safety
Hurricane season runs June to November. Flash floods are the real hazard in El Yunque, where streams can rise within minutes even when it is dry where you stand, and rip currents are the hazard at surf beaches such as Playa La Pared.
