Luquillo Tours: Night Kayaks, ATVs and Surf Lessons
Luquillo’s paid attractions are few and clear: surf lessons, horse and ATV rides, a glowing lagoon after dark, a boat day to a small cay and guided drives through the rainforest. Costs are in US dollars. Several figures below come from tour resellers, so treat them as starting points.
Surf lessons at Playa La Pared
Playa La Pared is where Luquillo goes to surf and bodyboard. Two schools teach there. Surfing Puerto Rico describes a lesson of about 2.5 hours for ages 8 and up, with equipment and snacks included. Rainforest Beach Lessons is the other. Prices are set by each school, so ask when you enquire.
La Pared has frequent rip currents, which is a good reason to take a lesson instead of paddling out alone. The National Weather Service in San Juan publishes a daily rip current forecast.
Carabali Rainforest Park
Carabali Rainforest Park is in the foothills above Luquillo and runs horseback and ATV tours. On reseller sites a one-hour horseback ride starts around $75, a two-hour ride around $116 and a beach ride around $165. An ATV costs from about $94 for an hour and about $147 for a 650cc machine, and each ATV can carry 1 or 2 riders. See the park’s own site at carabalirainforestpark.com .
Laguna Grande after dark
The lagoon at Las Croabas in Fajardo is about 20 minutes from Luquillo, and guided kayak tours are the only way to paddle it. Tours run 1.5 to 2 hours and reseller prices span roughly $58 to $115 a person. Swimming in the lagoon is prohibited under DRNA rules, and only licensed outfitters operate there.
Nobody can promise the glow. Darker nights show it better, and bright moonlight makes it harder to see, so choose a date with that in mind.
Catamaran to Cayo Icacos
This small cay sits off the Fajardo coast. Catamaran snorkel charters leave from Fajardo marinas, and reseller listings run about $125 to $185 per adult. Cayo Icacos is not a kayak trip from Luquillo.
El Yunque with a guide
Guided tours of the PR-191 corridor stop at La Coca Falls, Yokahu Tower and other short walks. La Mina is closed for construction, so tours leave it out. You can also visit on your own: the corridor is free, open 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and has no reservation.
Booking advice
Hurricane season runs June to November, and weather can disrupt boat and kayak trips. Read each cancellation policy. You can compare listings on GetYourGuide and Viator .
