Before you go (October 2026 advice): The US State Department rates Moldova at Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, and Transnistria at Level 3, Reconsider Travel (travel.state.gov ). The UK FCDO advises against all travel to Transnistria and gives no warning for the rest of the country (GOV.UK ). Drones from the war in Ukraine have entered Moldovan airspace this autumn, and flights from Chișinău have been disrupted at times. Check with your airline and your government before booking.

Romance on a Wine-Country Budget

Chișinău is a quiet place for couples, with the best moments found over a glass of wine or a long dinner. A good plan pairs one afternoon at an estate with a sunset walk and a table for two. Costs are in lei (MDL).

Spend a Night at Castel Mimi

Bulboaca, about 35 km east of the city, is home to Castel Mimi, a wine resort that describes itself as zero-emission and five-star. The estate welcomes guests every day.

Tastings Underground

Mileștii Mici sits about 20 km south. Its “Hai, Noroc!” tasting (1 h 30, 800 MDL, three wines) or the longer “Univers” (2 h, 1,200 MDL, five wines) makes an unhurried afternoon. Weekend and holiday visits add 100 MDL a person. Cricova, about 15 km north, offers the Business tour at 700 MDL and the Expert tour at 950 MDL, both with tastings. Golden Hour at the Cascade Staircase

Climb the restored 218 steps of the Cascade Staircase at dusk, then wander along the water at Valea Morilor. Visiting is free, and rowing boats can be rented in season.
