A Quiet Kind of Romance

Monteverde is a misty mountain town in cloud forest, and its romantic side is understated. There are no beaches and no hot springs here, since the nearest hot springs lie around La Fortuna and Arenal, about 3 hours off. What the valley does offer is a handful of intimate experiences: one canopy dinner, walks with a private guide, a night under the trees and a slow cableway ride. Dinner

San Lucas Treetop Dining sits among the treetops and serves in glass rooms. Guests look out over the Monteverde forest as the sun goes down. Details are on the restaurant’s site .

The Tribute menu has nine courses at $172, taxes included. Lunch starts at 12:30pm, sunset seating at 5:00pm and a late sitting at 8:30pm.
The Glass Lounge menu has eleven courses at $289 and seats one table each evening, so enquire as early as you can.

Walks for Two

A private guide makes a forest walk feel personal. The Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve prices a private walk at 80,000 colones (roughly $180) for up to three people, and each extra guest adds 20,000 colones. Walks begin at 7:30am at the earliest, and you should book a day ahead. Bajo del Tigre in Cerro Plano offers a private guided walk for $57, in the daytime or after dark.

After Dark

Night walks run in groups of no more than 9 or 10. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve starts its walk at around 6pm and finishes about 2.5 hours later. Curi-Cancha’s evening walk costs $35 and ends by 7:30pm. Animals are shy and mostly active at night, which makes a sighting possible but not certain. Wear warm clothes for 12 to 14 C and leave the flash off your camera.

Over the Treetops

Treetopia’s Scenic package costs $99. It bundles a Tree Tram ride with the Sky Walk, whose 42 m glass-floor bridge opened in March 2026. The cableway reaches 5,700 ft over a 1 mile round trip. Strong wind and thunderstorms halt operations.

Coffee

Cafe Monteverde Farm and Roastery welcomes visitors daily from 8am to 5pm at a farm 400 m south of the Canitas church. Tasting is hands-on, a farm-to-table lunch costs $15 extra, and a hotel shuttle adds $7.

Choosing a Room

Rooms and rates change often, so compare them on a booking site and read recent guest comments. Mornings and nights are cool, which makes heating worth asking about.
