Family Days in Monteverde: Bridges and Gardens
What Suits Children
The valley is cool, misty and damp, and the most family-friendly outings are short: a bridge walk, a garden or a gentle trail. Older children can add a zipline. Pack a jacket for each child and agree before you go that animals are for watching only.
Treetopia Park
- The Sky Walk costs $49 and has 6 hanging bridges. All ages are welcome, and wheelchairs can reach the sixth bridge. It includes the 42 m glass-floor bridge.
- The Tree Tram costs $59 and has no minimum age. It is a gentle 1 mile round trip lasting around 20 minutes.
- Sky Trek is a zipline course with a minimum age of 5. It costs $99 and includes the tram ride.
Operations stop in strong wind or thunderstorms, and pets must stay at home.
Selvatura Park
Selvatura adds 13 percent tax and fees to the prices below.
- Hanging bridges: $34.30 for children 4 to 11 and $49 for adults. The trail is 3 km with 8 bridges. Few sections are suitable for wheelchairs.
- Sloth Habitat: $40, with 12 sloths living freely among the trees. A guide leads the 30 to 40 minute tour, and touching is not allowed.
- Butterfly Garden: $25, with more than 30 species.
- Canopy tour: children from age 4 pay $56, and riders must weigh no more than 125 kg.
Gardens
The Monteverde Butterfly Gardens charge $6 for ages 4 to 6, $12 for ages 7 to 18 and nothing for under 3s, with guides from 9am to 3:30pm. The Orchid Garden has about 300 m of accessible path and includes a guided tour. Both are short stops. The Bat Jungle and Frog Pond are captive indoor exhibits, so check their hours and prices.
Forest Trails
The Essence Trail in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve is 1.4 km of easy walking, taking about an hour. Children 5 to 11 pay about $16, and under 5s enter free. Tickets are for a single timed circuit, booked online. The trail has no restrooms, so stop beforehand, and snacks wait until the walk ends.
At Santa Elena Reserve, children aged 8 to 12 pay 5,500 colones (about $12) in 2026, and the Mundo Joven trail meets national accessibility standards. Bajo del Tigre admits children from 6 to 12 for $10.80, and Curi-Cancha asks $15 for ages 5 to 20. At Curi-Cancha, anyone under 18 walks with an adult, and climbing trees is off limits.
Older Children and Teenagers
Monteverde Extremo, in La Cruz de Abangares, takes riders from age 6 on its Longest Canopy, from 5 on its horseback ride and from 14 on its bungee. Transport from Monteverde costs $10 per person. Weight limits apply to the bungee, canopy and swing, so check them first. Travel insurance often excludes zip-lining.
Night Walks
Children old enough to stay quiet can join a night walk. Bajo del Tigre charges $22.80 for ages 6 to 12, and Curi-Cancha charges $35 for ages 5 to 20. Nights are chilly at 12 to 14 C, and flash photography is out.
