Walking Chișinău: Three Routes and Free Tours
Before you go (October 2026 advice): The US State Department rates Moldova at Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, and Transnistria at Level 3, Reconsider Travel (travel.state.gov ). The UK FCDO advises against all travel to Transnistria and gives no warning for the rest of the country (GOV.UK ). Drones from the war in Ukraine have entered Moldovan airspace this autumn, and flights from Chișinău have been disrupted at times. Check with your airline and your government before booking.
Walking Chișinău
The centre is compact, so a day on foot is easy. Allow about half a day for the main route, and add time for a market or a heritage walk. Bring good shoes and a water bottle.
Route One: From the Arch to the Cascade
Start at the Triumphal Arch beside the Nativity Cathedral. Walk through Stephen the Great Central Park, past the Alley of Classics and the Pushkin monument. Continue to Strada 31 August 1989, where the National Museum of Art and the National Museum of History stand side by side, each at 50 MDL a ticket. Turn up Kogălniceanu street for the Ethnography and Natural History Museum. End by descending to the Cascade Staircase and Valea Morilor Park.
Museums are closed on Mondays, and the Ethnography museum also closes on the last Wednesday of the month. For hours see nationalmuseum.md .
Route Two: Boulevard, Columna and Cafes
Stroll Ștefan cel Mare boulevard, then turn into Columna street, where a pedestrian stretch has cafes and wine bars. Carpe Diem Wine Shop and Bar at Columna 136 opens daily from about 11:00 until 23:00.
The Central Market
Piața Centrală and its flower market are free to browse. The Central Bus Station on Mitropolit Varlaam street is nearby. Carry lei, and keep valuables out of sight, because the FCDO warns of pickpocketing in the capital.
Route Three: Jewish Heritage
Set aside about two hours, and keep voices low.
- Ghetto monument: Grigore Vieru boulevard at Ierusalim street.
- Former Choral Synagogue: Vlaicu Pârcălab 75, built in 1913 and now the Chekhov Russian Drama Theatre, with a 2023 plaque about its history.
- Pogrom memorial: Alunelul Park, Calea Ieșilor, for the events of April 1903.
- Old Jewish cemetery: reached by Strada Milano. It is an open, overgrown site, so dress respectfully.
Guides can be found through jcm.md . In July 1941 the surviving Jews of the city were confined to a ghetto by the Romanian authorities, and most were murdered or died during deportations.
