Monteverde Walking Tours and Trail Circuits
Choosing Your Walk
Monteverde has more walking than any other activity, and each of its four main reserves approaches it differently. Most sell self-guided tickets for marked routes alongside small guided groups. Guides know the plants and birds, and a guided walk improves the odds of seeing animals, though nothing is promised.
The Preserve’s Circuits and Guided Walk
The Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve sells one circuit per ticket in a set time slot. Order yours on the Preserve’s website .
| Circuit | Length | Time | Level | Highlights |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Essence | 1.4 km | about 1 hour | easy | centennial ficus, Cuecha Cascade |
| Heart of the Forest | 2.8 km | about 1.5 hours | easy to moderate | hanging bridge, wild avocado trees |
| Continental Divide | 4.1 km | about 2.5 hours | moderate | bridge, dwarf forest, La Ventana |
The guided Natural History Walk takes about 2.5 hours, starts between 7:30am and 1:00pm and takes up to 10 people, in English. Guide fees are separate. The meeting point is the Visitor Center plaza, 1.5 km below the entrance. Arrive 15 minutes early, because late arrivals may be turned away.
Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve
The reserve’s guided walk takes 2.5 hours for up to 10 people and comes with free coffee or tea. Groups leave at 7:30, 9:15, 11:30 and 1:00, and reservations should go in a day early. In 2026 an adult pays 20,000 colones (about $44), a senior 19,000, a student with ID 17,500 and a child 15,000. A private guide for 1 to 3 people charges 80,000 colones, and a specialist bird, plant or photo guide charges 100,000. The reserve’s trail page lists the five main trails.
Curi-Cancha
The Natural History tour runs 3 hours and starts at 8am or 1pm for no more than 9 guests. Adults pay $55 and children $45. A dedicated bird tour starts at 6:30am, lasts 4.5 hours and takes only 6 people, at $125 for adults and $115 for children. The reserve has 200+ bird species.
Bajo del Tigre
A guided day walk is $43 for adults, $41.20 for students and $35.80 for children, before tax. Reserve ahead and bring at least one other person, since two is the minimum. The Conservation League lists 4.5 km of trails here.
On Foot in Santa Elena Town
The town centre is small enough for a relaxed stroll. CASEM, a craft cooperative started by eight women in 1982, sells textiles, clothing, jewellery and carved items. The Orchid Garden offers a 45 minute guided tour and keeps hours from 9am to 5pm daily. Check the hours and prices of the Frog Pond before visiting.
Walking Tips
- Eat after your walk, because trails have no restrooms.
- Stay on marked paths, and keep wildlife at a distance.
- Quetzals are likeliest between January and June, and bellbirds are heard rather than seen.
- A rain jacket works better than an umbrella, which the Preserve bans.
