Antwerp makes a smart base for seeing more of Belgium because almost every trip starts from the same place: Antwerpen-Centraal, the 1905 railway cathedral. From those platforms you reach Mechelen in about 17 to 20 minutes, Brussels in roughly 45 minutes, Ghent in around 50 minutes, and Bruges in about 1 hour 30. Where you sleep mainly decides how long your walk to the platform is on travel mornings, so pick the area that matches how many day trips you plan.
Station-side: closest to the trains, usually the cheapest
Hotel listings cluster tightly around Antwerpen-Centraal, mostly budget and midrange chains a 2 to 7 minute walk from the platforms. This is the base to book if you have several early departures, since you roll your bag straight to the concourse instead of crossing town first. One honest caveat: the streets directly north and northeast of the station, around De Keyserlei and Kievitwijk, see some drug and petty-crime activity after dark, so keep to the lit main streets at night. On SNCB, standard second-class fares cap around EUR20.90 one way, under-26 and 65-plus riders get a flat 40 percent off any time, and weekend travel runs about 30 percent cheaper (verify current fares at booking).
The old centre if you want city evenings too
Basing around Grote Markt and the cathedral costs a little more, but it keeps you on foot to the sights when you are not on a train, and it is only a 20 to 25 minute walk or a short tram back to Centraal on travel days. Note that the trams to the station run normally on the right bank; only the premetro tunnel under the Scheldt is closed for renovation into 2027, which affects crossing the river, not reaching your platform.
Match the base to the trip
Mechelen and Ghent are easy half-day hops that work from any central base, so you can choose on price or atmosphere. Bruges and the coast at Ostend each eat most of a day and start with a longer ride, so a station-side room saves real time on those mornings. Lille in France is a genuine international crossing, so carry a passport or EU ID card whichever base you pick.
