Day Trips From Verona to Garda, Mantua and Vicenza
Day Trips From Verona
Verona’s rail station connects to several of northern Italy’s best day-trip destinations, and a few more are easy by car. Each section lists travel times and what to check. Train times come from timetables, and fares are left out because they change.
Lake Garda: Peschiera and Sirmione
Regional trains reach Peschiera del Garda in 13 to 19 minutes. Sirmione is farther: allow roughly 40 minutes by car, and note there is no direct train. The Scaliger castle and the Grotte di Catullo are the headline sights. A 2026 guide lists the Grotte at about 10 EUR and the castle at 6 to 8 EUR, but joint tickets and the Grotte opening days vary, so confirm locally. Lake Garda’s beaches are mostly pebble. The thermal Aquaria spa belongs to Terme di Sirmione .
Mantua
Mantua was the Gonzaga capital and is a UNESCO World Heritage city, about 45 minutes by regional train. Palazzo Ducale costs 18 EUR full and 11 EUR reduced from 2 January 2026, valid for one month, and the Camera degli Sposi needs a reserved time. Palazzo Te shows Giulio Romano’s Fall of the Giants; reported prices run from 11 to 15 EUR, so check at the door.
Vicenza
Frecciarossa gets you there in about 25 minutes, and the slower regionale veloce takes 34 to 39 minutes. See Palladio’s Basilica Palladiana, then the Teatro Olimpico, completed in 1585 by Scamozzi. La Rotonda is about a 20-minute walk from the centre.
Valpolicella and Soave
Valpolicella’s wine villages include San Pietro in Cariano, Fumane and Negrar. Book tastings in advance, as estate hours differ. The Parco delle Cascate di Molina is a waterfall park, about 7 EUR, closed in rain; a joint ticket with the Grotta di Fumane is about 14 EUR. Soave is a walled town with medieval Scaliger walls, and its castle has been listed as open Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00 to 12:00 and 15:00 to 18:00. Reach it by train to San Bonifacio and local transport, after confirming the connection.
Venice
Venice Santa Lucia takes about 1 hour 10 by Frecciarossa or Italo, or around 1 hour 30 on a regionale veloce. It is a long day, so start early.
Before you set off
- Check Trenitalia notices for strikes the day before.
- Verona Porta Nuova is about 1.5 km from Piazza Bra. Allow time for the walk or a city bus when you return in the evening.
- The Verona Airlink bus from the station to the airport costs 7 EUR as part of a combined rail and bus ticket, so keep this in mind on departure day.
