Pisa for Families With Children
Pisa for families with children
Pisa works well with children when you match activities to their age. The centre is flat and car-free, the main sights are close together, and several places let younger children in free. Prices are in euros and are 2026 figures. Check them before you go.
By age
- Under 3: the Calci natural history museum is free, and the lawns of the cathedral square are good for a break.
- Under 8: the city walls and the Pisa Card are free, but the Leaning Tower is closed to them.
- Under 11: with an adult, free entry to the Cathedral, Baptistery, Camposanto and both cathedral museums.
- 8 and over: eligible for the Tower climb, if they turn 8 by 31 December of the year of the visit.
Tower rules for parents
The Tower is 251 steps up a tilted spiral, taking about 30 minutes in a timed slot. Under-18s need a regular ticket and an adult, and ID may be requested. Children born in 2018 or earlier can climb in 2026, and those born in 2019 or earlier in 2027. A ticket for the Tower and Cathedral is about EUR 20, and there are no reduced child fares. Bags go in a free cloakroom, so allow time for that. Late arrival means no entry and no refund. Slots can be moved by time, not date, up to two hours ahead.
Walls and ships
On the Mura di Pisa, children up to 8 are free and a family ticket for up to five people is EUR 15, plus a EUR 1.50 booking fee online. It takes about an hour, with railings and lifts at several entrances. At the Museo delle Navi Antiche, children see Roman wooden ships and their cargo. It costs EUR 8, with a EUR 2 reduced fare, and opens on weekday mornings and weekend afternoons.
Space to run
San Rossore has long flat avenues and bike hire at Cascine Vecchie, including pedal vehicles. Linea 26 runs only on weekends and public holidays. Keep children away from the water at the estate, because bathing there is always prohibited. The Botanical Garden at Via Luca Ghini 13 has shaded paths, but check its page for hours.
Calci and the sea
At Calci, the university museum has whale skeletons and an aquarium. It costs EUR 15, ages 6 to 17 pay EUR 7, and some galleries are closed for refurbishment this year. Marina di Pisa is a bus ride on Linea 10, with a single ticket at EUR 2.90. Beaches are pebbly and partly protected by rocks, but free beaches may have no lifeguard. Choose a lido with a lifeguard in season and check the flag colour each day.
Practical points
Pickpockets work the cathedral square, so keep bags zipped. Pisa Card, about EUR 24 for seven days, covers the walls and several museums.
