Lucca
Lucca has regional trains about every half hour. The city is ringed by 4.2 km of Renaissance walls, wide enough to cycle on and closed to cars. In the centre, Piazza dell’Anfiteatro follows the outline of a Roman arena. The tower of the Guinigi family has trees on its roof, and the clock tower Torre delle Ore is nearby. Each costs about EUR 8 (EUR 6.50 reduced), a combined ticket is around EUR 19, and booking is required on weekends and holidays.
Livorno and Viareggio
Livorno is a working port with a canal quarter called Venezia Nuova and a big brick fortress, the Fortezza Vecchia. Cacciucco is its signature fish stew. Viareggio is a seaside town with Art Nouveau buildings along Viale Regina Margherita. The Carnevale there, with giant papier-mache floats, happens in February.
Florence
The faster regional trains take about 50 minutes, and the slower ones up to 80. Florence needs a plan: choose two or three of the Uffizi, the Accademia, the cathedral square and the Ponte Vecchio, since all of those are in Florence rather than Pisa.
Cinque Terre
It is a long day from Pisa, with a change at La Spezia and local trains onward. Choose two or three villages and leave time for the return. The 2026 adult one-day cards cost EUR 10 for the Trekking card (EUR 15 on peak days) and EUR 22, EUR 29.50 or EUR 35 for the Train card, depending on crowds. Some trail sections close or need timed permits, and the park website lists them.
Nearer places
- Calci: bus Linea 120 takes 25 to 30 minutes to a Carthusian monastery, visited by guided tour only. The natural history museum there costs EUR 15.
- Marina di Pisa: Linea 10 takes 20 to 30 minutes at EUR 2.90 for a single ticket valid for 90 minutes. The central beach is made of small pebbles, and many sections are private lidos. A lido with lifeguards is the safer choice.
- Volterra: about 65 km southeast, 1 hour 15 minutes by car or regional bus, with an Etruscan museum and alabaster shops.
