Evenings by the Arno in Pisa

Pisa suits a short couples’ stay of one or two nights. It is a university city with a handsome river, a few historic hotels and some good small restaurants, but it has no spa or resort scene, so many couples combine it with Lucca or a beach day. Prices are in euros and are 2026 figures. Confirm that any restaurant or hotel is open before you book.

A river walk at sunset

Begin on Lungarno Gambacorti, where the small Gothic church of Santa Maria della Spina stands at the water. Walk east along Lungarno Pacinotti and Lungarno Mediceo as the light falls on the palace fronts. Cross Ponte di Mezzo, the central bridge, and come back along the opposite bank. This costs nothing and takes about an hour.

Coffee with history

Caffè dell’Ussero at Lungarno Pacinotti 26 has served coffee since 1775 and sits in a Gothic brick palace. It is a good stop before dinner.

The cathedral square in the evening

During the summer opening, from 17 June to 31 August in 2026, the monuments in the Piazza dei Miracoli stay open until 22:30 with no extra charge. Outside summer the monuments close at 18:00, yet the square itself remains open and quiet at night. In summer, a late Tower slot is an option for couples who like heights, at about EUR 20.

The Luminara

The best night of the year falls on 16 June, the eve of the patron saint’s day, which will be Wednesday 16 June 2027. Streetlights along the river are switched off and about 100,000 lamps in white frames trace the palace windows and bridges. Fireworks begin at about 23:00 and last roughly 25 minutes, fired from platforms on the water. Arrive early for a spot on the embankment, and note that glass and aluminium containers are banned in public areas.

The Royal Victoria Hotel stands on the river at Lungarno Pacinotti 12 and has been run by one family since 1837. Relais I Miracoli on Via Santa Maria 187 is a period residence with eight rooms near the cathedral square, and only some rooms have a Tower view, so ask when booking.
