Siena Attraction Tickets, Towers and Museums
Guided visits and special tickets in Siena
A handful of Siena’s best experiences need a specific ticket, a reservation or an introduction. This page sorts them by how you get in, so you can decide what to book and what to simply turn up for.
Book with the Duomo’s Opera
The Porta del Cielo is the cathedral’s roof route: inside the upper galleries, beneath the rose window, then out onto terraces with long views to Monte Amiata. Tickets are EUR 21 for adults and EUR 6 for children aged 7 to 11, with under 7s free, and the season is 1 March to 6 January. The ticket includes every museum site on the standard pass, so it replaces rather than adds to the usual EUR 14 or EUR 16 Duomo pass. Online slots go on sale through the Opera’s ticket partner, and the office sells what is left. Neither age limits nor the length of the walk are published, and the stairs and narrow walkways rule it out for wheelchairs.
Pay at the door
- Museo Civico: about EUR 10 for the Lorenzetti and Martini frescoes, or EUR 11 when booked ahead.
- Torre del Mangia: EUR 10, in person only, never online. Climbs leave every 45 minutes in groups of up to 25, last climb around 18:00 in summer. It reopened on 25 April 2026 after a closure, so confirm it is open.
- Combinations: tower plus Museo Civico EUR 15 in one day, and with Santa Maria della Scala EUR 20 across two days.
Arrange in advance
Contrada museums are clubhouse collections, not public galleries. Each shows banners won at the Palio, historic costumes and ceremonial objects. The Tartuca museum, at Via Tommaso Pendola 21, accepts requests by email to museo@tartuca.it , and the museums of the Oca, Nicchio and Chiocciola also take arranged visits. Ask what the visit costs, because it differs by contrada.
The Bottini are medieval water tunnels that run under the city. The volunteer association La Diana leads small groups of ten along part of the Fonte Gaia branch. Admission is about EUR 20 for adults and about EUR 10 reduced, though the association itself does not publish prices. Under 8s are not admitted, there is no photography, and you must bring a torch and non-slip shoes. Visits stop from June to August.
Palazzo Chigi-Saracini
Home of the Accademia Musicale Chigiana at Via di Città 89, this palace holds paintings and a collection of instruments. Guided visits have run in the past; confirm days and fees with the Accademia directly. Its summer festival fills the halls and cloisters with concerts.
Water heritage
The Museo dell’Acqua at Fonti di Pescaia explains the aqueduct system and is open by reservation only, by phone on 0577 292614. Fontebranda, from 1246, is the grand brick fountain referred to by Dante.
What is shut
The Pinacoteca Nazionale has been closed to visitors since 26 January 2026, and nobody has announced a reopening. Nearby, Palazzo Chigi Piccolomini alla Postierla is run by the same state museums and is open.
