Gdańsk Amber Workshops: What They Cost
Gdańsk’s workshop scene is built on one material, Baltic amber, and you can get close to it for anything from nothing to the price of a jewellery class. Here is the ladder, cheapest first, with what each step costs.
Free: watch the cutters on Mariacka
Ulica Mariacka, the street running from St Mary’s Basilica down to the river, has amber studios on its ground floors and stone terraces. Jewellers cut and polish the raw resin and set it in silver on gem lathes, and on a quiet afternoon you can watch from the doorway without buying anything. Go on a weekday morning, when the street is quieter and it is easier to ask about a stone with something trapped inside it.
Free: hunt for raw amber
The raw material comes from the sea. After strong north or north-easterly gales in autumn and winter, pieces of unworked amber wash up with the seaweed on the beaches of Sobieszewo Island, at the eastern end of the city. The only cost is a city bus ticket, 4.80 PLN for a single ride, with routes on ztm.gda.pl . The island is protected land with two bird reserves, so search the tideline and leave the dunes alone.
37 PLN, or free on Monday: the Amber Museum
The Amber Museum fills the Great Mill (Wielki Młyn), a 14th-century mill building it moved into in July 2021. The collection explains what the Mariacka jewellers are working with: pieces holding insects and plants from about 40 million years ago, a raw lump weighing 68 kg, and 17th-century caskets and altars carved from amber.
- Regular: 37 PLN
- Reduced: 26 PLN
- Family: 99 PLN
- Monday: free
It opens 10:00-18:00 and closes on Tuesday. Hours are on muzeumgdansk.pl . Visit before you shop, not after, because the cases show what good work looks like.
Paid: a hands-on session
Some studios run sessions where you shape or set a piece yourself, and availability depends on the season and the studio. Search amber jewellery workshops on GetYourGuide and read what the price includes before you book. Summer sessions fill first.
Further afield: Malbork’s amber collection
Malbork Castle, a train ride of roughly 25 to 60 minutes from Gdańsk Główny, keeps an amber collection on its Historical route. It is a good add-on for anyone already making the trip, and a poor reason to go on its own. Monday entry is free but covers only the Grounds route, so check on zamek.malbork.pl which route includes the amber before you choose a ticket.
Buying amber without overpaying
- Ask where the stone came from. A seller who knows the piece can tell you whether it is raw or polished and where it was worked.
- Compare two or three studios on Mariacka before buying, since prices for similar pieces vary.
- Pay by card in PLN, never in your home currency. The conversion offered at the terminal carries a markup.
The verdict
On a budget, the best amber afternoon in Gdańsk costs nothing: a Monday visit to the Amber Museum, followed by an hour watching the Mariacka studios. Pay for a hands-on session only if you want to take home something you made.

Before you go
Put the Amber Museum on Monday morning and the Mariacka studios in the afternoon, since the museum shuts on Tuesday and the two are a short walk apart.
