Multi-Day Safari Plans from Hlabisa
Hlabisa offers little overnight accommodation, so longer trips from here are built around nights inside Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park (HiP). Anyone sleeping in the park still pays the daily conservation fee on top of the room rate, about R300 to R320 per international adult. All amounts are South African rand (R) from Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife’s tariff for 1 November 2025 to 31 October 2026. A fresh tariff starts on 1 November, so confirm current rates.
Two Camps in One Trip
A natural plan is to split your stay between Mpila in the iMfolozi sector and Hilltop in the Hluhluwe sector. Both are booked through Ezemvelo.
At Mpila, a two-bed safari tent has a standard-season base rate of R1,320 a night and a two-bed chalet R1,400. Power comes from a generator between 06:00 and 22:00, and the closest big shops are in Mtubatuba, about 50 km off. At Hilltop, a two-bed rondavel is R870, a two-bed self-catering chalet R1,650, a four-bed chalet R3,300 and the eight-bed Mtwazi Lodge R7,800. Treat these as starting figures and confirm them when booking.
Walking the Wilderness
For a deeper bush experience, iMfolozi’s wilderness area hosts catered trails led by rangers. Their fees exclude the conservation charge. Prices run as follows: Short Trail, two nights, R3,350; Extended Short, three nights, R5,250; Base Camp, three nights, R5,350, from Mndindini Trails Camp; Primitive, three nights R3,450 or four nights R4,100; and Explorer, four nights, R4,400.
Short and Base Camp trails need a party of four, and Primitive and Explorer need six. Participants must be 14 with a parent or guardian, or 16 on their own. The iMfolozi trails office takes bookings on +27 35 550 8478. The trails were pioneered in the 1950s by Ian Player and Magqubu Ntombela.
A Luxury Option
Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge is inside the park and sells full-board stays. A Safari Room is priced at about R5,630 per person sharing, per night, between 1 July 2026 and 30 April 2027. From Richards Bay Airport allow about 90 minutes, and from King Shaka International in Durban about 3.5 hours.
Park Plus the Coast
You can finish a park stay with a drive of about 76 km to St Lucia for an estuary cruise, and then go on to Cape Vidal for beach time. Turtles come ashore there from about November to March.
Staying Safe
Arrive before dark every time, because armed robbery and carjacking affect rural roads after sunset. Mpila’s fence stops elephants only, so remain in your accommodation at night. A seasonal malaria risk applies in northern KwaZulu-Natal, and a travel clinic can recommend what to take.
