Romantic Safari Lodges around Hlabisa
For couples, the romantic side of Hlabisa lies a short drive away in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park (HiP), where lodges and bush camps overlook waterholes and ridges. Whoever sleeps in the park pays the daily conservation fee as well, about R300 to R320 per international adult. Prices are in South African rand (R).
Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge
Isibindi Africa Lodges runs Rhino Ridge on a ridge over a waterhole inside the park. Its Honeymoon Bush Villa comes with a private deck, plunge pool and fireplace, while Luxury Bush Villas, Safari Rooms and Family Rooms complete the choice. There is a shared pool and an organic spa, and the lodge offers game drives, guided walks, night drives and bird watching.
A Safari Room costs about R5,630 per person sharing per night on a full-board basis between 1 July 2026 and 30 April 2027. Villas cost more, so request a quotation. Richards Bay Airport is around 90 minutes away and King Shaka International in Durban about 3.5 hours. The lodge also promotes a flight transfer to Hluhluwe aerodrome.
Bush Lodges at Mpila
Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife manages several remote lodges around Mpila Camp in the iMfolozi sector. Nselweni takes two guests and can be booked with no view, a partial view or a river view. Hlatikulu and Gqoyeni take eight guests each, with a cook and a guide, and Masinda Lodge, about 10 km from the camp, also takes eight with a cook.
Simpler options inside the camp are safari tents at roughly R1,320 and chalets at roughly R1,400 for two beds, so check rates when you book. Power is off between 22:00 and 06:00. Hyena, leopard and lion pass through the camps by night while the fence keeps out only elephants, so stay indoors once it is dark.
Chalets at Hilltop
Hilltop Camp, in the Hluhluwe sector, rents self-catering chalets among the forest from about R1,650 for two beds. The eight-bed Mtwazi Lodge suits a group celebration.
An Evening Drive
Mpila’s sundowner drive in an open vehicle costs R420 per person, sold to parties of four or more. It sets off at 18:00 from Monday to Saturday and 17:00 on Sundays. Reserve at camp reception.
Before You Go
These Ezemvelo amounts apply from 1 November 2025 to 31 October 2026, and a new tariff begins on 1 November. Gates stay open from about 05:00 to 19:00 in summer and 06:00 to 18:00 in winter, so arrive early. Keep road trips to daylight because of carjacking risks, and ask a travel clinic about malaria tablets, since northern KwaZulu-Natal has a seasonal risk.
