Ranger-Led Walks around Hlabisa
Hlabisa has no guided village or town walks. Its roads lack pavements and carry livestock and fast vehicles, and no heritage route exists. The walking worth doing happens inside Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park (HiP) behind an armed ranger, or on the marked self-guided paths at False Bay. All prices are in South African rand (R).
Day Walks with a Ranger
Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife leads bush walks from Mpila Camp in the iMfolozi sector and from Hilltop Camp in the Hluhluwe sector. The 2025-26 tariff charges R400 per person, which means R800 for the minimum party of two. Groups stop at eight, and a ranger with a rifle walks at the front. Walks leave in the morning and again at 14:00. Children under 12 are turned away at Mpila, and the tariff sets 13 as its limit. Book at the camp office or on +27 33 845 1067.
The conservation fee is separate, about R300 to R320 per international adult daily. The next tariff year starts on 1 November, so confirm the figures first.
Wilderness Trails in iMfolozi
Longer trails sleep out in the wilderness area with a ranger and catering included. Fees leave out the conservation charge. The Short Trail takes two nights at R3,350, the Extended Short three nights at R5,250, and the Base Camp Trail three nights at R5,350 starting from Mndindini Trails Camp. The Primitive Trail takes three nights at R3,450 or four at R4,100, and the Explorer Trail takes four nights at R4,400.
A party must number four on the Short and Base Camp trails and six on the Primitive and Explorer trails. Walkers need to be 14 with a parent or guardian or 16 without one. Telephone the iMfolozi trails office on +27 35 550 8478. Ian Player and Magqubu Ntombela started the guided trails in the 1950s.
Paths You Can Walk Alone
The Umbhombe forest trail at Hilltop Camp runs for about 760 m inside the camp fence and takes 10 to 30 minutes. Cheetah have been seen leaping the fence, so keep your eyes open.
At False Bay Park, part of iSimangaliso, the Dukandlovu loop covers 9 km of forest and lakeshore, and the Mpophomeni trail takes 1.5 to 2 hours. Mornings are cooler. Hippos and crocodiles live in the lake, so stay on the marked paths and well back from the water.
Elsewhere in HiP and in the hills around Hlabisa there are no self-guided bush hikes, and no commercial hiking or mountain-bike routes.
Staying Safe
Pack sturdy shoes, water and repellent. Seasonal malaria occurs in northern KwaZulu-Natal, so a travel clinic can advise on preventive medicine. Drive to your starting point in daylight, because carjackings happen on rural roads at night.
