Sightseeing Spots near Hlabisa
Hlabisa is a small rural village with no museum, gallery or heritage site of its own, so sightseeing means taking in the countryside and the viewpoints in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park (HiP). Nyalazi Gate, the closest entrance, lies about 21 km away. The list is short, and it works best as a supplement to a park visit. Prices are in South African rand (R).
Hides at Waterholes
Bhejane Hide lies north-west of Mpila Camp, in the iMfolozi sector. Mpapha Hide, sometimes spelled Mphafa, stands west of Mpila, raised above a waterhole beneath a rocky outcrop, and visitors should keep off the rocks in front. Thiyeni Hide is inside HiP and works well for birds. Stepping out of the car at any hide is done at your own risk, so move quietly and return to the vehicle before dusk.
Hilltop Camp
On a ridge in the Hluhluwe sector, Hilltop Camp looks over forested hills. Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife lists a restaurant, bar lounge and curio shop on site. Call ahead to find out whether day visitors can eat there.
Centenary Centre
About 12 km from Mpila and close to Nyalazi Gate, the Centenary Centre explains how game capture reshaped conservation in the park. Bomas hold injured or relocated animals. The capture complex can be toured only in capture season. The Vulamethlo Craft Market is nearby, and a take-away is open from 08:00 to 16:00 each day.
The R618
The R618 passes through Hlabisa on its way between Nongoma and Mtubatuba. It crosses rolling hills dotted with rural Zulu homesteads. Pull over only in places that feel safe with clear visibility, and avoid the road after dark, when carjackings occur and livestock wander onto the tar.
Royal Links and the Reed Dance
King Misuzulu kaZwelithini was born in the Hlabisa area in 1974, but the Zulu king does not live there. Royal palaces stand near Nongoma, about 49 km away, and they are private. The Umkhosi woMhlanga, or Reed Dance, takes place each early September at a venue that changes. The 2026 events were held at royal residences in iNgwavuma and uPhongolo, and public access is limited, so consult the official programme.
Baskets in Museums
A lidded ilala-palm basket made around 1990 by Beauty Ngxongo of Hlabisa belongs to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Johannesburg’s Constitutional Court Art Collection holds six Hlabisa baskets. Neither can be seen in the village, so look them up online.
Fees
A day in the park costs about R300 to R320 per international adult on the 2025-26 tariff. A new tariff year starts on 1 November, so check the amount before your visit.
