Panama City Romance: Casco Evenings and Taboga
Romance in Panama City is small and well lit: an evening in the old quarter, a bike ride along the causeway at dusk, and a quiet island a ferry ride away. The list is short, but each choice works.
An evening in Casco Viejo
Begin at Plaza de Francia with the sea wall in front of you and the skyline across the bay. As the light fades, walk Paseo Esteban Huertas, where bougainvillea hangs over the old wall. The restored core is patrolled and lit at night, and it is the part of the city where an after-dinner stroll is easy. Rooftop lounges such as Tantalo, Selina and CasaCasco put a drink in front of the sunset. After dark, take an Uber back downtown rather than walking west out of the quarter.
Dusk on the Amador Causeway
The causeway is a 6 km breakwater with water on both sides. Hire bikes about an hour before sunset, ride out past the islands and watch the city lights come on. A catamaran sunset sail is another option; see sunset sails on Viator and ask the operator for current prices.
A slow coffee morning
Casco Viejo roasters serve specialty Geisha coffee in quiet courtyards; Sisu, Bajareque and Café Unido are the names to look for. A single pour-over costs about $9 to $16. Go before 09:00, before the tour groups.
A dinner worth booking
Restaurants such as Maito serve modern Panamanian tasting menus. Book a table early and check the price when you reserve.
A night on Taboga
The ferry from Fuerte Amador takes 30 minutes and costs $24 per adult return. Bring ID or a passport. Taboga is car-free, with flowers along the lanes and a calm beach at Playa Restinga. Staying overnight means a quiet evening after the day trippers have gone. Check times at Taboga Express .
If you have a third day
A night in a San Blas cabana is the bigger gesture: a 4x4 and boat from the city, simple rooms and hammocks. It requires cash, a passport and an early start. See the multi-day trips page .
Tips
- December to April is the dry season, the best time for sunsets.
- Pay in US dollars and keep small bills for tips.
- The official visitor site, Visit Panamá , lists current events.
Verdict: one evening in Casco Viejo plus a Taboga night is a complete short trip for two.
