Petra Tickets, Licensed Guides and Club Cars
Safety notice, 31 October 2026. Jordan is caught up in the 2026 regional conflict around Iran, and flights can be disrupted at short notice. At the time of writing, the US State Department puts the entire country at Level 3, “Reconsider Travel”, with Level 4, “Do Not Travel”, for the borders with Syria and Iraq and a few named areas. Its advice has also singled out Ma’an city and parts of Ma’an Governorate. The UK FCDO warns against travel only within 3 km of the Syrian border and carries no warning for Petra or Wadi Rum. Petra and Wadi Musa are open and running today, but the picture can shift quickly. Check the US travel advisory and the UK travel advice before booking and again before departure. Everything that follows is written for a normal trip.

Choosing a guide
Licensed PDTRA guides wait at the Visitor Center, and the prices above cover a whole group, so sharing the cost makes it cheaper per head. Pick the Monastery option if you want to reach Ad-Deir, since the climb is 800 to 850 steps. Guides add most value on the unmarked sections and at the Al-Khubtha viewpoint, where the Tourism Board advises hiring one through the Visitor Center.
Riding in the Siq
Since 2021 electric club cars have carried visitors along the Siq in place of horse-drawn carriages. There is no advance booking, and very young children go free. The cars stop at the Treasury, so the Monastery steps are still yours to climb. Horses, donkeys, mules and camels also work in the park, and welfare groups have recorded overloading. If you want an animal ride, fix the total fare first or turn it down, and remember that walking is always available.
Petra by Night rules
The evening show lights the Siq and the Treasury with candles. Children under 10 enter free. The ticket sits outside both the Jordan Pass and the daytime fee, and you must already hold a valid daytime Petra ticket or Pass to buy it. Sales are in person on the day at the Petra by Night office at the Visitor Center, because online booking is temporarily unavailable. Wet weather cancels the show, so ask at the Visitor Center that afternoon. Information is on petrabynight.jo .
The Back Door route
Walkers coming from Little Petra can use the official 4x4 transfer, and the ticket is checked at the Little Petra office, where you need a valid Petra ticket. The route is unmarked in places, and a guide makes it easier.
Museum and desert jeeps
The Petra Museum, next to the Visitor Center, is air-conditioned and included in the site entry. Opening hours should be checked on the day. Jeep tours of Wadi Rum are sold as a separate trip into Aqaba Governorate, with prices set by each operator.
