Romantic Getaways in Montevideo, Uruguay
A romantic stay in Montevideo
Montevideo suits couples who like slow days over spectacle. There are few headline romantic sights, so the pleasure is in the pacing: a late coffee, a long waterfront walk, an evening performance and a table for two. Bigger romantic moments, such as a sunset ceremony or a colonial old town, are on day trips. Costs are in Uruguayan pesos (UYU), about 40 to the US dollar. Street crime does occur in the capital. The UK government advises against walking downtown or around the port alone, especially at night and at weekends, so take a taxi or ride-hailing car home after dinner.
Morning
Start with coffee at Cafe Brasilero, Ituzaingo 1447 in Ciudad Vieja, which is described as the oldest cafe in the city and dates from 1877. Hours were not confirmed, so check before you go. Afterwards, wander the pedestrian Peatonal Sarandi in daylight.
Afternoon
The Rambla is the city’s shared living room. Walk or sit near the Punta Carretas lighthouse (1876), Playa Ramirez or Pocitos, and watch locals sip mate on the seawall. The estuary water is brown to green, so treat the shoreline as a place for walking and sunsets. If a beach is flagged with a red flag carrying a green cross, nobody should swim.
Evening
Teatro Solis, at Buenos Aires 678, programmes opera, ballet and Comedia Nacional plays, and the box office is open daily from 15:00 to 19:00. For dinner, La Pulperia at Lagunillas 448 in Punta Carretas is a parrilla, though sources disagree on its opening days and booking rules, so ask ahead. When paying by card, remember that restaurants cut VAT from 22% to about 13% for electronic payment until 30 April 2027. Tango fans can catch a free open-air milonga in Plaza Fabini, Plaza Cagancha or Plaza de los 33 Orientales, although timetables vary.
Where to sleep
The Sofitel Montevideo Casino Carrasco and Spa began as the Hotel Casino Carrasco in 1921. It stands at Rambla Republica de Mexico 6451. In the old town, Alma Historica Boutique Hotel occupies a restored 1920s townhouse on Plaza Zabala, and secondary sources mention 15 rooms and a roof terrace with a hot tub. Non-residents with foreign ID pay 0% VAT on hotel stays.
Out of town for a night
Colonia del Sacramento is the natural overnight. The coach from Tres Cruces takes about 2 hours 45 minutes and costs UYU 579 one way according to COT, since there is no ferry on that route. For a sunset, Casapueblo at Punta Ballena holds its Ceremonia al Sol every day. Entry is UYU 600, and early arrival is advised. A lunch at Bodega Bouza in Montevideo department needs advance booking.
