Romantic San Juan del Sur: Sunsets and Stays
Advisory, as of October 2026: On the US State Department scale Nicaragua is at Level 3, “Reconsider travel”, at the time of writing. The stated reasons are a serious risk of wrongful detention, arbitrary enforcement of laws, searches of electronic devices and limited consular help, and US citizens have been denied entry or expelled. The UK FCDO takes a different line: it does not advise against travel, but it warns that foreigners cannot take part in political activity and that drones are banned. San Juan del Sur is a long-established tourist town. Check the US advisory and the FCDO page before booking, take out travel insurance and do not bring a drone.
Setting the Mood
San Juan del Sur is a laid-back surf town, and its romance comes from simple things: a sunset, a quiet beach and dinner by the water. The ideas below fit a long weekend.
Sunset by Catamaran
Casa Oro Eco Hostel sells a catamaran trip for US$80, from 13:00 to 18:00, with snacks and an open bar. It needs at least six people. For a private trip, charters for eight guests are listed from about US$800 to 1,300 on boat-hire sites.
Two Places to Stay
Morgan’s Rock Hacienda and Ecolodge. About 13 km from town, a 25-minute drive north. The lodge has 15 bungalows and 3 two-bedroom villas on 4,000 acres, almost half of it a private reserve, and the mile-long Playa Ocotal beach in front. Sea turtles nest there, though sightings are not guaranteed. Details are on the Morgan’s Rock site .
TreeCasa Hotel and Resort. It has an infinity pool facing the Pacific, with the Christ statue on the skyline. Listings give different locations and room counts, so confirm both before you book.
Golden Hour at the Statue
The viewpoint at the Christ of the Mercy statue is at its best near sunset. The statue measures about 24 m with its pedestal, and foreigners pay about US$2 to enter. Hours are reported as 08:00 to 17:00, so go up in the afternoon and plan to be down before dark. The path is steep, so keep valuables out of sight.
Quiet Beaches
Majagual has little development and almost no shade, and it stays quiet. Playa Ocotal, a mile-long beach that is almost always empty, can be reached by staying at Morgan’s Rock or by walking north from Majagual. Neither has lifeguards, so stay in the shallows.
Dinner by the Water
The bay has more than a dozen beachfront bars and restaurants. El Timón, a long-running seafood place on the beach, is a popular choice, and any beachfront palapa has the sunset. Ask about prices before ordering.
Tips
- Pre-arrange a driver for the trip home after dark.
- Carry US dollars in small bills.
- Take care on the Pacific beaches, where currents are strong.
