San Juan del Sur Day Trips: Ometepe, Granada
Advisory, as of October 2026: On the US State Department scale Nicaragua is at Level 3, “Reconsider travel”, at the time of writing. The stated reasons are a serious risk of wrongful detention, arbitrary enforcement of laws, searches of electronic devices and limited consular help, and US citizens have been denied entry or expelled. The UK FCDO takes a different line: it does not advise against travel, but it warns that foreigners cannot take part in political activity and that drones are banned. San Juan del Sur is a long-established tourist town. Check the US advisory and the FCDO page before booking, take out travel insurance and do not bring a drone.

Ometepe From San Jorge
No boats run from San Juan del Sur to Ometepe, because the town is on the Pacific and the ferries cross Lake Nicaragua from Puerto de San Jorge. To get there, take a chicken bus to Rivas for about C$30 to 40 (roughly US$1) and then a shared taxi to San Jorge for about C$30, or hire a private taxi for about US$25 to 35 and agree the price first.
Ferries and lanchas to Moyogalpa take about 60 minutes. There are 15 departures between 07:00 and 17:45, and the last return from Moyogalpa is at 17:30. Lanchas do not run on Sundays, and the lake is choppy from November to February. Fares are under about US$3, with a small port tax. The schedule is on the Ometepe ferry page .
A same-day round trip is a very early and tight day, with about three hours on the road and two on ferries. Staying overnight on the island makes better use of the trip. Neither Volcán Maderas nor Volcán Concepción is near San Juan del Sur, and both need an experienced guide.
Granada and Masaya
Granada lies about 95 to 100 km north. Masaya Volcano has night visits at about US$10 for foreigners. Expect a crater glow, not a lava lake. Mombacho is also two hours or more away, so choose one or two of these in a day and not all three.
Turtles and Beaches Nearby
La Flor has olive ridley nesting from July to January, and arribadas are unpredictable. Casa Oro Eco Hostel sells the evening trip for US$30. Marsella, 25 to 35 minutes along the coast, has calm water, while Majagual is quiet with almost no shade.
