San Juan del Sur with Kids: Beaches and Sights
Advisory, as of October 2026: On the US State Department scale Nicaragua is at Level 3, “Reconsider travel”, at the time of writing. The stated reasons are a serious risk of wrongful detention, arbitrary enforcement of laws, searches of electronic devices and limited consular help, and US citizens have been denied entry or expelled. The UK FCDO takes a different line: it does not advise against travel, but it warns that foreigners cannot take part in political activity and that drones are banned. San Juan del Sur is a long-established tourist town. Check the US advisory and the FCDO page before booking, take out travel insurance and do not bring a drone.
Water Safety Comes First
San Juan del Sur’s surf beaches have strong currents and no lifeguards. Do not rely on a lifeguard being on duty, even at Playa Hermosa. Keep children in arm’s reach at any beach, and choose the calm ones first.
Best Beaches for Families
- Playa Marsella: the calm swim beach, with gentle water, about 25 to 35 minutes from town.
- Playa Remanso: the closest surf beach, 5 to 20 minutes away. It suits beginner lessons, and swimming works on low-swell days, but waves can get heavy in the middle of the wet season.
- Playa Hermosa: a beach club behind a gate that costs about US$3 per person, with shade, hammocks and a restaurant. The surf is heavy, so children stay at the shoreline.
The Christ Statue
Cristo de la Misericordia is a short visit. The statue is about 24 m tall including its pedestal, and there is a small chapel with displays on Christ statues around the world, a circular walkway and views over the bay. Entry is about US$2 for foreigners. A steep road leads up, and cars can park at the top. Daylight visits are safest, so keep bags and phones tucked away.
Ziplines and Monkeys
Aventura Las Nubes, the canopy park on the ridge above town, takes children from about 8 to 10 years old, depending on weight. Families who prefer to stay on the ground can walk the trails and look for howler monkeys. Ask for prices when you book.
Turtle Hatchlings at La Flor
Hatching at the La Flor refuge runs roughly from October to February. Older children can go with adult supervision. The road to the refuge is dirt, with stream crossings in the wet season, and the drive after dark is the main hazard. Casa Oro Eco Hostel sells a trip for US$30 from July to February. Never touch turtles, eggs or hatchlings. Rangers ask visitors to use no flash and no white light.
Tips for the Day
- Bring sun protection and water, especially for Majagual and Marsella.
- Agree taxi fares first.
- US dollars in small bills are widely accepted.
