Tours and Attractions in San Juan del Sur
Advisory, as of October 2026: On the US State Department scale Nicaragua is at Level 3, “Reconsider travel”, at the time of writing. The stated reasons are a serious risk of wrongful detention, arbitrary enforcement of laws, searches of electronic devices and limited consular help, and US citizens have been denied entry or expelled. The UK FCDO takes a different line: it does not advise against travel, but it warns that foreigners cannot take part in political activity and that drones are banned. San Juan del Sur is a long-established tourist town. Check the US advisory and the FCDO page before booking, take out travel insurance and do not bring a drone.
Turtles at La Flor
La Flor is a wildlife refuge about 18 to 22 km south of San Juan del Sur, 30 to 45 minutes by road. The turtles are olive ridleys, and the main nestings run from July to January, peaking in September and October. Hatching follows from roughly October to February. Some nights bring no turtles, so a tour cannot promise a sighting.
The Casa Oro Eco Hostel turtle expedition is priced at US$30 and operates between July and February. Other operators quote US$25 to 35, usually including transport. The refuge fee is about C$200 (about US$5.50) for foreigners and half price for children, and a taxi costs US$25 to 40 each way. Rangers direct visitors on the beach, and their rules include no flash, no white light and no touching turtles or eggs. Swimming and surfing are not allowed inside the refuge.
Zipline at Aventura Las Nubes
The canopy park sits on the ridge about 10 minutes above town. It has nine platforms and views of the Pacific and Lake Nicaragua. Guided tours that include transport start at about US$40 for two hours of ziplining. Children need to be about 8 to 10 years old, depending on weight. Ask for the total price before you book.
Casa Oro Experiences
- Chocolate tour: a guided half-morning cacao session, Saturdays at 10:30, US$10.
- Catamaran sail: 13:00 to 18:00, US$80, snacks and an open bar, minimum six people.
Other Tours
Private catamaran charters for eight guests are listed from about US$800 to 1,300 on boat-hire sites. Horse rides at Rancho Chilamate cost from about US$65 to 75 when booked through the ranch. The CervecerÃa San Juan del Sur brewpub, founded around 2013 to 2014 by two American surfers, serves its Panga Drops Keller Pils there in town.
Booking Advice
- Book through a hostel desk or a known operator, and confirm pick-up details.
