San Juan del Sur Sights: Christ Statue, Beaches
Advisory, as of October 2026: On the US State Department scale Nicaragua is at Level 3, “Reconsider travel”, at the time of writing. The stated reasons are a serious risk of wrongful detention, arbitrary enforcement of laws, searches of electronic devices and limited consular help, and US citizens have been denied entry or expelled. The UK FCDO takes a different line: it does not advise against travel, but it warns that foreigners cannot take part in political activity and that drones are banned. San Juan del Sur is a long-established tourist town. Check the US advisory and the FCDO page before booking, take out travel insurance and do not bring a drone.
The Short List
- Cristo de la Misericordia, above the north end of the bay
- The town beach and its row of bars
- Playa Marsella, the calm beach
- Playa Majagual, the quiet one
- Playa Ocotal, the empty one
Cristo de la Misericordia
The Christ of the Mercy statue was completed in 2009. It stands about 24 m tall in total, a 15 m statue on a 9 m pedestal. A small chapel at the base has displays on Christ statues around the world, and there is a circular walkway and a viewpoint over the bay. Entry is about US$2 for foreigners, and reported hours are 08:00 to 17:00, so check on the day.
You can walk up a steep road or drive and park at the top. Go in daylight, keep valuables out of sight and come down before dusk.
The Town Beach
The beach curves around the bay, with more than a dozen bars and restaurants along it. Volleyball and football games start on the sand around sunset. Ask locally about the water and surf before swimming.
The Calm Beach: Marsella
Playa Marsella is about 25 to 35 minutes from town. The water laps gently, and it is the beach for swimming and for children. It is not a surf beach.
The Quiet Beach: Majagual
Playa Majagual is about 30 to 40 minutes away. It has little development and almost no shade, with waves a bit bigger than at Marsella. Bring water and a hat.
The Empty Beach: Ocotal
Playa Ocotal is a mile-long beach that is almost always deserted. It lies in front of Morgan’s Rock Hacienda and Ecolodge, about 13 km (25 minutes) from town. You can reach it by staying at the lodge or by walking north from Majagual.
Surf Beach Warning
Surf at Maderas, Hermosa and Yankee comes with strong currents and no lifeguards. The UK government’s safety page reports drownings on parts of this coast. Photograph them from the sand.
Practical Notes
- Coastal drive times vary, so allow about 20 to 30 minutes for most beaches.
- Taxis and pre-arranged drivers are the norm, and fares are agreed first.
- Drones are banned, so leave yours at home.
