San Juan Sightseeing: Forts, Church and Art
Sightseeing in San Juan is compact. Nearly every landmark in Old San Juan is within a short walk of the next, and one extra district, Santurce, holds the main art museum. Costs are in US dollars. Start early, because the stone streets and walls hold heat. Hurricane season is 1 June to 30 November.
Two forts, one ticket
San Juan National Historic Site includes Castillo San Felipe del Morro, begun in 1539, and Castillo San Cristóbal, begun in 1634 and rebuilt through the 1780s. San Cristóbal covers 27 acres and is described by the National Park Service as the biggest fortification Spain built in the New World, with troop and countermine tunnels. The walls between them were finished in 1678.
- Admission is $10 for visitors aged 16 and over and covers both forts for 24 hours.
- Children aged 15 and under go in free.
- Cards only, no cash.
- Open 9am to 5pm daily, apart from Thanksgiving, 25 December and 1 January.
El Morro’s lawn has been closed for turf work since April 2026. Check the park’s plan your visit page to see whether it has reopened.
Church, mansion and waterfront
- Catedral de San Juan Bautista, 151 to 153 Calle del Cristo: a marble tomb said to hold Juan Ponce de León and the preserved remains of San Pío are inside. Worshippers use the building, so cover shoulders and knees. Opening times vary by source.
- La Fortaleza: the governor’s residence since 1533. Visitors report free tours of roughly half an hour on weekdays, between 8:15am and 3:30pm. Bring ID and phone ahead, because the tour times change daily.
- Paseo de la Princesa: about 300 metres of promenade by the south wall, open around the clock and ending at the Raíces Fountain beside the Puerta de San Juan.
Galleries and museums
Museo de las Américas fills the second floor of the Cuartel de Ballajá. Adults pay $8 and seniors, children and students $5. It opens Tuesday to Friday from 9am to noon and 1 to 4pm, and on weekends from 11am to 4pm.
Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, 299 Avenida de Diego, is in Santurce. It closes Monday and Tuesday, stays open to 8pm on Thursday and is free on Thursdays from 5 to 8pm. General entry is listed at roughly $17, so look at the museum’s visit page first.
Calle Cerra, also in Santurce, is lined with murals, and The Art Walk Puerto Rico offers a guided walk of about 90 minutes.
Out of town
El Yunque, about an hour east, has a free road corridor and an $8 visitor centre for ages 16 and over. Several trails, including La Mina Falls, are closed. See Forest Service updates before leaving. Swimming at Condado and Ocean Park is dangerous because of rip currents.
