Shymkent With Children
Planning a Family Day
Families do best in Shymkent when they mix a morning outing with a long indoor or shaded rest. Midsummer afternoons often pass 35 C and can top 40 C, so drinks, hats and sunscreen are essential.
Animal and Park Day
The zoo at Baidibek Bi Avenue 113/1 charged 600 KZT for adults and 300 KZT for ages 6 to 17 in a 2022 report, and under sixes enter free. It is known for lions, tigers, a hippo, giraffes, zebras and camels, and signs ban feeding the animals. Jailaukol Park next door has boats and catamarans on a lake and the Altyn Eye Ferris wheel. The Asanbay Askarov dendrological park offers shade, with roe deer and peacocks among the sights.
Rides and Water
Fantasy World has a Ferris wheel, a pirate ship, go-karts and trampolines. The Fontan Aquapark faces it across the road and opened in 2018 with seven slides. In 2023 an adult ticket cost between 5,000 and 7,000 KZT and a child ticket between 3,000 and 4,000 KZT. Ask about height limits, and keep young children within arm’s reach near water.
Parks for Play
ShymCity Park opened in 2024 with a lake, fountains, playgrounds and a skate park. Ken Baba park has swan ponds, rides and pavilions representing national cultural centres, and it has existed since 1908. Central Park, from 1886, offers plenty of shaded benches.
Indoor Options
Shymkent Circus is near Abay Park, with about 1,200 seats and a gem-faceted roof. Check the current programme if you prefer shows without animals. Mega Planet has a cinema, an arcade and indoor skating, and Shymkent Plaza is the largest mall.
Learning Stops
At the Kazyna complex, children can walk a miniature alley of regional landmarks and look up at the 23 m Baidibek Bi monument. The Retro Garage shows classic American and Soviet cars. The Shymqala old town has towers, tunnels and an observation deck, although some areas are worn.
Meals and Rest Stops
Child-sized portions of plov, samsa and shashlik are easy to find at cafes and in food courts, and bazaars sell fruit and nuts for snacks. Build a rest into every outing: after a zoo morning, retreat to an air-conditioned mall or to your hotel pool before an evening in the parks. Rixos Khadisha has an indoor pool and a children’s pool, which suits families who want a calm hour after a hot day.
Getting Around With Kids
