Sousse with Kids: Beaches, Parks and Boat Trips
Read the current US State Department and UK FCDO advice for Tunisia before booking. Some border and military areas are closed to tourists. The FCDO does not name Sousse in any warning zone, and families will see security staff at hotels and sights.
Families usually plan Sousse around the sea, with a sight or an outing on alternate days. This page lists the options that exist and what to check for each.
Beaches
The city beach is Plage Boujaafar, and resort beaches continue north towards Port El Kantaoui. Where a flag system operates, learn it and obey it. The FCDO advises that children are supervised at all times, even with a lifeguard present, and urges extra care where no lifeguard, flag or sign is visible. In late summer jellyfish can appear. A stung child should see a lifeguard or a pharmacist.
Parks at Port El Kantaoui
Two parks turn up in listings. Acqua Palace is a water park, and Hannibal Park is an amusement park with rides including roller coasters. Opening seasons, hours and ticket prices are not published reliably, so check the dates before you travel and read the age and height rules at each attraction.
Boat trips
Replica pirate galleons depart from Port El Kantaoui for trips of two to four hours, and some stop for a swim near the Kuriat islands. Compare listings, since operators and prices vary, and ask about life jackets.
A castle-style morning
The Ribat is a stone fortress with a corner tower, which many children enjoy. The tower stairs are narrow, so it suits school-age children better than toddlers. Pupils and students get a reduced heritage rate (2 TND under the April 2026 tariff), so take school ID. The Kasbah museum next door shows mosaics of gods and sea creatures, and closes on Mondays.
Short train ride
The Sahel Metro runs between Sousse Bab Jedid and Monastir every half hour or so. Children can see the Ribat that appeared in a famous comedy film.
What to skip
Animal rides and dolphin shows are sold at resorts, but standards of care vary and they are best left out. No wildlife park near Sousse is currently recommended.
Tips for easier days
- Plan sights for the morning and beach time after lunch.
- Carry water, hats and sun cream.
- Carry dinars (TND) for small purchases and keep your exchange slips.
- Pack swimwear that suits local norms away from the beach.
