Tsaghkadzor Day Trips to Lake Sevan and Beyond
Travel advice, 31 October 2026: UK FCDO guidance covers parts of Armenia only, namely everything within 5 km of the eastern border with Azerbaijan and the M16/H26 road from Ijevan to Noyemberyan. The US rates Armenia Level 2. Tsaghkadzor, Lake Sevan and Dilijan are outside the named areas. Review gov.uk and travel.state.gov before setting out, skip night driving in the mountains, and allow for rough roads in winter.
From Tsaghkadzor you can reach a lake, a forested valley town and the capital in a morning’s drive. Here is how the options compare.
| Destination | Distance by road | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Lake Sevan | 22 to 25 km | 20 to 40 minutes |
| Dilijan | about 60 km via Sevan | 1 to 1.25 hours |
| Haghartsin | about 13 km past Dilijan | an add-on to the Dilijan trip |
| Yerevan | about 54 km | 50 minutes to 1 hour |
| Geghard | about 76 km | 1 hour 10 minutes |
| Tatev | about 263 km | 3 hours 45 minutes each way |
Figures come from Rome2rio and local guides, so add time for traffic and weather.
Lake Sevan
Sevan is the easiest outing. The lake sits at about 1,900 m, and the monastery of Sevanavank on the peninsula costs nothing to enter. The water is cool to cold, around 15 to 24 C in July and August depending on where you stand, and winds can pick up quickly. Do not expect lifeguards. Keep to the peninsula and the usual shore road, and do not drive on towards the far eastern end beyond Vardenis.
Dilijan and Haghartsin
The drive to Dilijan passes Sevan first, then covers another 37 km, about 35 minutes. Dilijan is a forested town, and Haghartsin Monastery, from the 10th to 13th centuries, lies about 13 km further on, with Goshavank close by. On this trip, stay on the main road and keep away from the road between Ijevan and Noyemberyan. Aim to be heading back before dark.
Yerevan
Yerevan is a straightforward day out by car. If you rely on public transport, a minibus or bus link exists, though sources differ on the station and times, so confirm them on the day. A local guide describes minibuses from the Yeritasardakan (Youth) metro station to Hrazdan, followed by a short local minibus to Tsaghkadzor for about 100 AMD. Taxis cost about 8,000 to 10,000 AMD one way in an app such as GG or Yandex Go.
Garni and Geghard
Geghard is about 76 km from town. Pairing it with Garni makes a long day, and the trip is easier from Yerevan than as a round trip from the resort. Treat it as an early start with a late return.
What does not fit in a day
Tatev is far to the south in Syunik. At about 263 km and roughly 3 hours 45 minutes each way, it needs an overnight stay or a separate trip from Yerevan.
