What Waitomo offers couples

Waitomo is a cave village and has no luxury spas, wineries or resorts. Couples come for dark caves, glowworms and slow boat rides. Stay a night or two. Figures are NZD from operator sites in 2026, and each can change, so confirm the rate with the operator.

Boat rides under the glowworms

  • Waitomo Glowworm Cave: a 45-minute tour that finishes with a silent boat ride, from $85 per adult. No photography or filming is allowed, so you simply look up.
  • Spellbound: a 150-minute trip through two caves for up to 12 guests, including a 20-minute flat-water boat ride. From $109 per adult. It meets at 334 Boddies Road, Oparure, about 15 km from the village, and cameras are welcome.

Private and smaller tours

  • Glowing Adventures (trading as Down to Earth Waitomo, 1199 Oparure Road, Te Kuiti) runs private tours for 1 to 8 people at $1,199 a group, on its own land and including a wild cave. Shared Off the Beaten Track trips are $219 per person, ages 12 and over.
  • Caveworld, 23 Waitomo Village Road, offers the 75-minute Footwhistle tour. Solar LED lights switch off at the river so the glowworms show. A private tour can be arranged with the operator.

After dark and by the coast

The Ruakuri Walk, about 4 km from the village, has glowworms at night, brightest beside the main bridge. The stairs are steep and slippery, so carry a torch.

Kawhia Ocean Beach is more than an hour from the village and has a hot water beach. Dig a private pool in the sand within about 2 hours of low tide, either side, and bring a spade.

Dinner and beds

HuHu Cafe has a deck in the village, so check its hours before you plan dinner there. Waitomo Caves Guest Lodge is a B&B with an official website, and Waitomo Top 10 Holiday Park is about 600 m from the Glowworm Cave.

Tips

  • Arrive 30 minutes before any cave tour.
  • A flood warning can cancel tours, so read operator notices before you travel.
  • Choose a late cave slot if you want a slow dinner afterwards.
  • Fill up in Otorohanga, Piopio or Te Kuiti, because no fuel is sold west of Waitomo.
  • Keep to marked tracks, since limestone farmland hides vertical shafts.
