Addis Ababa With Kids: Zoo, Museum and Forest Park
Before you plan: an armed conflict is under way in Ethiopia. Federal forces and Tigray-aligned groups began fighting again on 23 September 2026, Ethiopian Airlines stopped flying to Tigray, and drones were reported over military sites in Addis Ababa on 1 October. The British FCDO tells travellers not to go to Tigray, Amhara or Gambela, or to parts of Oromia, Afar and other regions. It gives no warning against Addis Ababa itself, but it flags a high terrorism threat, security checkpoints, and crime around Meskel Square, Bole and Entoto. The US rating is Level 3, Reconsider Travel, at the time of writing. Families should check gov.uk travel advice for Ethiopia and travel.state.gov before booking and again before departure.
Family outings in Addis Ababa come down to a zoo complex, a museum, a forest park and a garden, plus a lakeside resort an hour or so out of town. The city stands at about 2,355 metres, so plan quiet first days, offer plenty of water and let children set the pace.
Animals at Unity Park
Inside Unity Park at Arat Kilo, the Black Lion Zoo shows Ethiopian black-maned lions through glass, with visitors looking down from a 175 metre artificial cave. The larger Unity Zoo has about 37 mammal species, an aviary and an aquarium. A foreigner’s regular ticket is USD 20, children are charged from the age of 2, and the park shuts on Mondays. Gates are open Tuesday to Sunday, and the ticket desk sells from 9:00 to 16:00. These figures come from recent visitor guides, so confirm them on arrival.
A museum with a famous skeleton
The National Museum of Ethiopia displays a cast of Lucy, since the real fossil is kept in a vault. One guide recommends it for children aged 8 and over. The basement fossils tend to hold young attention best, and the ethnography on the third floor suits older ones. Foreigners pay a modest fee in cash, and Monday is a closing day.
Entoto Natural Park
Entoto covers 1,300 hectares between 2,600 and 3,100 metres. Paid activities include horse riding, a zipline, rope courses and a trampoline park, and there are bike paths. Foreigners pay a separate entrance fee. Alcohol and smoking are banned. Because the FCDO names Entoto as a crime hotspot, travel by car in daytime, keep the family together and never let children wander quiet paths. Take it very gently at that height on your first day.
Gulele Botanic Garden
The garden covers 705 hectares, and a 2021 study recorded about 90 bird species there. It suits a slow morning outdoors. No entry fee could be found, so ask at the gate.
Kuriftu Resort & Spa at Bishoftu
The resort lies by a crater lake on the Addis-Bishoftu corridor, which the FCDO exempts from its all-but-essential advice for East Shewa. That is an exemption, not a promise of safety. A water park was reported open from 2020, so ring ahead to check it is running. See the day trips page for how to travel there.
Family safety checklist
- Pickpockets, often children, may beg, spill a drink or pretend to be ill. Zip bags and keep them in front of you.
- Bags and jewellery are snatched at traffic lights, so keep car windows up.
- Driving standards are poor, so hold children’s hands at kerbs.
- Take yellow or app taxis, not blue-and-white ones.
- Birr trade at about 160 to 165 to the US dollar in October 2026, and small notes help.
- Download an offline map, because GPS can be unreliable.
