San Juan Walking Routes: Old Town and Santurce
Two districts suit walking in San Juan: Old San Juan, a grid of cobbled streets inside the old walls, and Santurce, where murals cover buildings along Calle Cerra. Both can be done on your own, and each also has a guided option. Bring water, sun protection and shoes that cope with cobblestones. Hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November.
Route 1: Old San Juan loop
- Start at the Puerta de San Juan and Raíces Fountain. The Paseo de la Princesa begins here, a free promenade of about 300 metres beside the south wall, open at any hour.
- Climb to Calle del Cristo. The Catedral de San Juan Bautista stands at numbers 151 to 153. It is a working church, so cover your shoulders and knees.
- Cross the squares. Plaza de Armas and Plaza Colón are public squares that link the streets.
- Finish at the walls. Walk along the fortification line towards El Morro.
Route 2: the wall walk between the forts
El Morro and San Cristóbal are just under a mile apart, and the walk along the wall takes 15 to 20 minutes. Walking the walls costs nothing. The $10 ticket applies only to going inside the forts, is valid for 24 hours, covers ages 16 and over (younger children are free) and takes cards only. The forts open 9am to 5pm. The grass in front of El Morro is under repair, and during the mid-January San Sebastián festival, El Morro and the north walls close from 7pm to 5am. The park answers common questions on its FAQ page .
By car, use the underground car park at the end of Calle Norzagaray, then allow 5 to 10 minutes on foot. Vehicles cannot enter El Morro’s grounds. The Tren Urbano ends at Sagrado Corazón, away from the old city, so a bus or taxi finishes the trip. Do not count on the free trolleys, which have been reported as not running.
Route 3: Calle Cerra murals in Santurce
The Art Walk Puerto Rico leads guided walks of about 90 minutes along the murals. No 2026 mural festival date has been published, so treat the walk as the reliable way to see them.
Guided walks in Old San Juan
Flavors Food Tours, 206 Calle Tetuán, runs a 2-hour history walk, a food tour of up to five stops, a Rum Runners cocktail tour and a guided El Morro tour from outside El Convento Hotel. Rates are published only on its booking page, reachable through Flavors Food Tours .
Water and beaches
Condado and Ocean Park have rip currents that can pull swimmers out, and tourists were swept out there in March and April 2026. Stay on the sand unless a lifeguard is on duty and the flag is not red, as at Balneario de Escambrón.
