Couples Evenings in Nessebar and Irakli
Nessebar offers couples a quiet, low-key kind of romance. The offer is small and simple: it is an old walled peninsula with cobbled lanes, a harbour, local wine and a few boat trips. This page sketches a day for two in the order it works best. All prices are in euros and approximate, and most outings run from June to September.
Morning: the Old Town before the crowds
Enter through the western gate past the wooden windmill and walk the lanes while the peninsula is quiet. Visit St Stephen for its wall paintings dated 1599, at about 4.60 euros per adult. The windmill and the small churches close for lunch in high season, so see them before 14:00.
Afternoon: wine
Messembria winery in the Old Town serves six local wines with a cheese board. A one-hour tasting with focaccia costs about 25 euros, and the fig wine is praised.
Late afternoon: by boat
A short sunset cruise out of Nessebar costs about 59 euros per adult. Longer options include a catamaran morning cruise with lunch for about 54 euros. Weather can cancel sailings, so book a flexible date.
Evening: the peninsula after dark
The ruins of St Sophia, the 5th to 6th century basilica known as the Old Bishopric, are free to see, and the southern cliff by St John Aliturgetos faces the open sea. Choose a waterfront tavern on the peninsula for seafood. Plan around the season, because most restaurants close between mid-October and the end of March.
Cobbles get slippery after rain, so pick flat shoes. Do not swim after dark: lifeguards leave at about 18:00 and Black Sea rip currents are a real risk.
A day away: Irakli beach
Irakli is a wild beach in a protected area, about 30 to 32 km north of Nessebar, with Obzor about 12 km beyond it. It makes a quiet half-day for a couple with a car or a taxi. Treat the sea with caution here too and respect the red flag.
Staying on the peninsula
Cars need a permit to enter the Old Town, arranged in advance through your accommodation, so ask your hotel or guesthouse to arrange it when you book. Parking North, on Kraybrezhna Street, costs about 7.50 euros for up to 24 hours.
Church etiquette
The church of the Mother of God is a working church, usually open 8:00 to 19:00, so dress modestly there. Christ Pantocrator is closed for conservation, and only its exterior can be seen from outside the fence.
