Multi-Day Plans From Areni: Wine and Monasteries
Advice as of October 2026: the UK FCDO says not to travel within 5 km of Armenia’s eastern border with Azerbaijan or along the M16/H26 road from Ijevan to Noyemberyan. The US rates Armenia Level 2 and advises against the Azerbaijan border region. Areni, Noravank and the other stops here fall outside those zones. Read gov.uk and travel.state.gov before departing, and stick to main roads in Syunik and Gegharkunik.
Option 1: Two Nights Based in Areni or Yeghegnadzor
- Day 1: Areni-1 cave and one or two wineries.
- Day 2: Noravank and the Arpa Protected Landscape.
- Day 3 morning: the Yeghegis valley, Spitakavor or Jermuk.
Lodging listed on booking sites in Areni includes Areni Wine Art, Areni House B&B, Areni Wine Cellar guesthouse and Siran Guest House. In Yeghegnadzor, the Old Bridge B&B is at Levonyan 16, in its own building apart from the winery. Confirm everything before you quote a price or plan around a room.
Option 2: Yerevan Base, Four or Five Nights
Stay in the capital and treat Areni as one outing. Garni and Geghard make a day, and Khor Virap, Areni and Noravank make another. The drive to Areni is about 110 km and takes 1.5 to 2 hours each way.
Option 3: Two-Day Push South
- Day 1: Khor Virap, the Areni-1 cave and Noravank, then over the Vorotan Pass, which is 2,344 m high, to Zorats Karer (Karahunj) near Sisian. Sleep in Goris.
- Day 2: Tatev and the Wings of Tatev at Halidzor, which is about 131 km from Areni by road, so allow 2 to 2.5 hours. Drive back along the M2.
Stay on main roads. A return over the Selim (Vardenyats) pass past Sevan is not a realistic third day after Tatev, and the pass closes under winter snow.
Option 4: Wine and Monasteries Loop
Link Yerevan, Khor Virap, Areni, Noravank, Yeghegis and Jermuk, then return on the M2. Treat drive times as approximate. The Yeghegis valley and Jermuk each deserve a half day.
Option 5: Festival Weekend
The Areni Wine Festival usually falls on the first Saturday of October. The 19th edition, on 3 October 2026, is finished, and the 2027 date has not been announced. Look on armenia.travel for it. About 30,000 visitors were expected in 2026, so reserve Areni and Yeghegnadzor lodging months ahead.
Getting Around
No direct bus goes to Areni as a destination. Marshrutkas to Yeghegnadzor, Vayk and Goris stop near the village on request. Nothing public reaches Noravank, so arrange a driver or tour transport.
