Multi-Day Trips and Longer Stays Around Addis Ababa
Before you plan: an armed conflict is under way in Ethiopia. Federal forces and Tigray-aligned groups began fighting again on 23 September 2026, Ethiopian Airlines stopped flying to Tigray, and drones were reported over military sites in Addis Ababa on 1 October. The British FCDO tells travellers not to go to Tigray, Amhara or Gambela, or to parts of Oromia, Afar and other regions. It gives no warning against Addis Ababa itself, but it flags a high terrorism threat, security checkpoints, and crime around Meskel Square, Bole and Entoto. The US rating is Level 3, Reconsider Travel, at the time of writing. Check gov.uk travel advice for Ethiopia and travel.state.gov before booking and again before departure.
There is no multi-day trip out of Addis Ababa that this guide can responsibly suggest in October 2026. The classic routes cross regions where the FCDO tells travellers to stay away altogether or to travel only if essential, and fighting was reported there in September and October. The sections below explain the reasoning and show what to do with a longer stay instead.
The routes that would normally be listed
Lalibela, Gondar, Bahir Dar, the Blue Nile Falls, the Simien Mountains, Axum, the Danakil Depression and Debre Libanos are places where travel is advised against at present, so no itineraries, prices or booking links appear here.
The FCDO advice reaches across the whole of Amhara and Tigray, and Lalibela sits on the Amhara front line named in reporting from September 2026. Afar has its own restrictions, and foreigners are reportedly unable to use Afar’s airports. The area around Debre Libanos, north of the capital, lies on the A3 corridor, where the FCDO advises against all travel.
Why flying north is no workaround
A plane ticket changes how you arrive, not the conditions on the ground. Ethiopian Airlines stopped flying to Mekelle, Axum and Shire from 23 September 2026, the FCDO reports that all civilian flights to and from Tigray were suspended on 22 September, and it warns that northern flights may be suspended or cancelled at short notice. A traveller could be left stranded in a region where advice says not to be.
The south
Some readers ask about the southern Rift Valley and the Bale mountains. Current conditions there are unclear, so they are not recommended here. Parts of Oromia and the Guji zones are on the FCDO lists, so read the regional page with care.
Make a longer base in Addis Ababa
Four or five days in the capital can be full. Combine the National Museum with the Ethnological Museum, give Unity Park its own morning, and fit in a coffee ceremony and an evening of Ethio-jazz. The activities and sightseeing pages have the details. Reach Entoto by car and in daytime, since the FCDO names it as a crime hotspot.
Then add the Bishoftu crater lakes as a single day out. They lie about 48 to 62 kilometres away on the Addis-Adama Expressway, which the FCDO excludes from its East Shewa warning. Exempt does not mean secure, and you should not continue on to Adama or Awash.
Practical points
- Dates to watch: the Great Ethiopian Run is listed for 22 November 2026 and Timkat for 19 January 2027. Both may change, and the FCDO notes bigger crowds and a higher threat at festivals.
- The official e-visa portal is www.evisa.gov.et . Fee figures differ between guides, so confirm the fee there.
- Make sure your insurer covers Ethiopia and keep bookings flexible.
- In October 2026 one US dollar buys roughly 160 to 165 birr.
