Romantic Ghana: Aburi, Busua and a Volta Stay
Romantic getaways in Ghana
Couples find fewer ready-made romantic options in Ghana than in beach-resort countries, and that is part of the appeal: the best moments are quiet ones, on a hillside, a riverbank or an empty beach. This is a short, honest list. Figures are in cedis (GH₵); the rate was about 11.7 per US$ on 1 October 2026 and shifts, so treat dollar equivalents as approximate.
Aburi, cool air above Accra
About 35 km north of the capital, Aburi Botanical Gardens sit on the Akuapem ridge. Palm avenues, big old trees and a pergola path known as Lovers’ Lane make an easy half day, and entry is about GH₵20. Go early on a weekday and take a picnic.
Akosombo and the Volta
Royal Senchi Resort sits on the Volta River at Akosombo, roughly 90 minutes north of Accra. It offers river cruises, kayaking and spa treatments; contact the resort directly to confirm what it currently runs. Compare Akosombo stays on Booking.com for nightly rates.
Busua and the Western coast
Busua, on the Western Region coast, is a small beach town known for surfing and a slower pace. Flights from Accra to Takoradi take about 40 minutes; the road onward adds time. Open-coast beaches face the Atlantic, where rip currents and powerful waves cause drownings every year; a hotel pool or sheltered lagoon is the safer choice for weaker swimmers. Save the swimming for your hotel pool and use the beach for sunsets.
One splurge: Mole
Zaina Lodge, inside Mole National Park, has tented chalets, an infinity pool and views over waterholes where elephants gather. Rates start near US$330 a night. Reaching it takes a flight from Accra to Tamale (about an hour) and a road journey of roughly 2.5 hours; it cannot be done as a day out from Accra, which is 690 km and about 10 hours away by road. Park entry is GH₵60 per foreign adult and a ranger-led walk costs GH₵20 per person per hour. Information is at molenationalpark.org . The US advises reconsidering travel to parts of northern Ghana, including areas of the Savannah Region; check travel.state.gov and the FCDO page for Ghana first.
Before you book
Paperwork comes first: UK and US passport holders must hold a visa, requested through the government’s e-visa site, evisa.immigration.gov.gh , which shows the current fee. Carry your yellow fever certificate, because it is required and otherwise you may be turned back or vaccinated at the airport. Get malaria advice from a doctor or travel clinic before departure; the risk covers the whole country, including the coast and Accra.
Cedis in cash cover most gates and street food, mobile money is common, and cards work at larger Accra hotels and restaurants.
Verdict: Aburi followed by the Volta makes a gentle southern trip, and Zaina Lodge is the one splurge worth the journey. For other plans, read the multi-day trips page .
