Family Days in Areni: Easy Climbs and Clay
Areni is a wine village in Vayots Dzor, not a family resort. Tastings are for adults. What the village does offer is a handful of short, free or cheap stops that suit a day trip from Yerevan, which is about 1.5 to 2 hours by car. Take water and sun cover between May and October.
Guided Beginner Climbing
The Areni sector of the Noravank canyon has eight easy routes graded 5a to 6a+, which the climbing database marks as good for beginners and children. The same database warns that climbing is dangerous and not always permitted. Go only with a qualified guide. Up The Rocks, in Yerevan, says it handles guide and instructor requests by email. Bring your own helmets and harnesses, because rental is not something to rely on.
A Short Cave Visit
The Areni-1 cave is about 2 km from the village, close to the main highway. It is small, dry and dusty, and the headline finds are in museums. The 5,500-year-old leather shoe is at the History Museum of Armenia in Yerevan, so tell children what to expect before you go. Tickets cost about 1,000 AMD each. Timetables differ from one listing to the next, so check on the day. A cave museum is planned for around the end of 2026, and it is worth confirming before you set out.
Church and Village Lanes
The Holy Mother of God church is a short trip from the village, about 0.5 km north on a hill over the Arpa river. It was finished in 1321, according to the inscription by the west door, and its west portal shows the Virgin and Child. It was restored after the 1840 earthquake. Entry is free, and the whole visit takes little time. Village lanes are quiet and easy to stroll at a child’s pace.
Hands-On Workshops
- Arhestanots Studio in Areni offers a clay masterclass. It is listed as family friendly, needs 24 hours’ notice and may not run in every season, so ask when you book.
- Areni Wine Factory runs a lavash workshop by reservation. Children can bake while adults wait for the wine tasting.
Goat Watching
Bezoar goats live in the Arpa Protected Landscape and are watched with a ranger, not from the roadside. Guides suggest early morning or evening. Reserve in advance with the foundation that manages the area, which keeps a visitor centre in Yeghegnadzor.
Safety at Noravank
Noravank is a good stop in daylight, about 10 km from Areni. Its Burtelashen church has a narrow outside stair on the west facade with no handrail. It is steep, so do not treat it as a play area, and hold small children by the hand.
